The Phi Phi Islands are situated between the large island of Phuket and the Western Andaman Sea coast of the Mainland. Phi Phi Don is the larger and principal of the two islands, the other being Phi Phi Leh. The are administered by Krabi province.

There are no accommodation facilities on Koh Phi Phi Leh, but it is however only a short boat ride from Koh Phi Phi Don.The rest of the islands in these groups are Bida Nok, Bida Noi and Bamboo island, but these are not much more than large limestone rocks jutting out of the sea.

Phi Phi Don was initially populated by Muslim fishermen during the late 1940’s and later it became a coconut plantation. The Thai population remains more than 80% Muslim.

The Phi Phi islands were also used for the setting of the island hide away of Scaramanga in the James Bond movie “ The Man with the Golden Gun”

The tsunami devastated the islands that hit Thailand in December 2004. However the infrastructure was quickly restored except for the waste handling, which has been a much slower operation.

Also on Phi Phi Leh there is the Viking Cave from which there is a thriving Bird Nest soup industry.

The islands are noted for Corals and amazing Marine life. Koh Phi Phi (pronounced pee pee)
