Getting to Sakon Nakhon.

Sakon Nakhon is in the upper Northeast. It is on the Phu Phan mountain range and has many forest temple retreats for meditation. Sakon Nakhon is 647 kilometres from Bangkok and has an area of 9,605 square kilometres. Sakon Nakhon consists of the following districts: Muang Sakon Nakhon, Waritchaphum, Kutbak, Kusuman, Ban Muang, Phanna Nikhom, Sawang Daen Din, Wanon Niwat, Phang Khon, Akat Amnuai, Songdao, Kham Ta Kla, Tao-ngoi, Khok Si Suphan, Nikhom Namun, Charoen in, Phon Na Kaeo and Phu Phan.

 

By Car

From Bangkok, takes highway 2 to Saraburi and turn right into highway 2, via Nakhon Ratchasima, Amphoe Ban Phai of Khon Kaen to Ban Tha Phra. Get into highway 23 via Maha Sarakham and Kalasin, then use highway 213 to Sakon Nakhon. (7 to 9 hours  respecting speed limits) - Kalasin 128 km's south east - Nakhon Phanom 93 km's north east - Nong Khai 210 km's north west - Udon Thani 159 km's west

 

By Bus

Transport Co, and Private Bus Service provider operate daily service from Bangkok to Sakon Nakhon . Buses leave Northeast Bus Terminal ( Mo Chit )  daily

 

By Train

State Railway of Thailand operates daily train service from Bangkok to Udon Thani, where tourist can catch routine bus to Sakon Nakhon, 159 km away  3 - 4 hours, buses going to Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan can stop in Sakon Nakhon ). The night train from Bangkok usually starts at 8 PM, is supposed to reach Udon Thani around 6 AM ( more likely 9 AM ). around 1000 Baht for a soft bed in two beds cabin first class with air con.

 

By Plane

Nok Air  operates flight from Bangkok to Sakon Nakhon ( around 3500 Baht one way in 2010 )

Air Asia  operates flight from Bangkok to Udon Thani ( 1000 - 1500 Baht one way in 2010, sometimes as low as 200 Baht ) In Udon Thani, tourist can catch routine bus to Sakon Nakhon, 159 km away( 3 - 4 hours, 100 Baht in 2010, buses going to Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan can stop in Sakon Nakhon ).

Getting  around when there

You can get around by bus, tricycle and motored tricycle that available in the city. Fare depends on your negotiation. There is no real rental shop for tourists, but you can arrange in almost any motorcycle shop a daily rental for around 100 - 200 Baht, or monthly for 1500 - 2000 Baht ( prices in 2010 )
