Location: Lamphun Province is located in the northern part of Thailand. It can be reached by National Highway No. 11 (The Asian Highway), 689 km. long ; Phahonyothin Road, 724 km. long, and a railway 729 km. long. It is situated at 18O N Latitude and 99O E Longitude and belongs to the upper northern provinces. Lamphun is only 22 Km. from Chiang Mai. The area has great potential for development into a centre of progress in the upper north and the Sub-Mekong Region, or the Economic Quadrangle, along with Chiang Mai.


Size: Lamphun is the smallest province in the north with an area of about 4,505,882 km 2. or about 2,815,675 rai or 4.85% of the whole upper northern region. The widest part is 43 km., its length from north – south is 136 km.


Borders:

The North borders on Saraphi and Sankamphaeng of Chiang Mai.

The South borders on Thoen of Lampang and Sam Ngao of Tak.

The East borders on Hang Chat, Sop Prap and Soem Ngam of Lampang.

The West borders on Hod Chomthong, Hang Dong and San Patong of Chiang Mai.

Wat Phra That Hariphunchai Sited in mid town, Wat Phra That Hariphunchai was

built during the reign of King Arthitayarat, a descendant of Queen Chamthewi some

800 years ago. A principal landmark is the 46 - metre tall golden Chedi whose

present appearance was the result of the restoration work in 1443 by a king of

Chiang Mai. It has long been regarded as a major place of worship. Other architectural

works include the ancient-style brick arch adorned with fine designs and the pair of

sculptured lions at the door. There are also a square - shaped Chedi and a Khmer -

style Buddha statue. It is open at 6 a.m.-6 p.m. The entrance fee is 20 Baht.



The Phrathat Hariphunchai Pagoda has a nine - tiered umbrella made of gold weighing about 6500 grams. The square-shaped base of the 46 - meter-high gold - topped Chedi in the centre of the courtyard is the oldest structure in the temple. Ten centuries younger world.
