State Railway of Thailand

A hyperlink has been created on the link site page for the web site of the State Railways. Some maps and route pages have been used from this site and the copyright belongs to the State Railway. The content has been used here because it is felt that they deserve a mention for the good work they do and you will see from their web site much more information is available with regards to the history and also there is a listing of the fares printed to give you an idea of  the journey charges.

There is a very good train service operating around Thailand. Bangkok - Hua Lamphong - is the main station and from here a train can be booked for most parts of Thailand. Dont expect them to be the same as any where else, they are usually  slow. Sometimes taking over night to reach their destination. I  have travelled the Bangkok to Hat Yai journey and the Bangkok to Chiang Mai journey. The journey to Hat Yai was booked at Hua Lamphong and 1st Class sleeper was reserved. It is best to book before you travel otherwise you will not get a sleeper compartment. These compartments have two beds arranged bunk bed style, these are made ready by the railway staff before retiring. A small wash basin is in the room along with a small table to eat food (this can be purchased on the train and is of good quality).

However you will need to leave the compartment for the toilet. Be prepared for this - on some trains it is just a hole in the floor on others proper toilets are available.

The journey to Chiang Mai was booked in a 2nd class sleeper compartment where you sit at a table and again food can be ordered on the train, I have always made use of this service on the train because of the quality. Again rail staff prepare the beds for retiring for the night. The opportunity to view the scenery that you would not otherwise see is worth the train journey, and using the sleepers you wake up refreshed to start the new day in a new place.
