Cabbages & Condoms, all about the Charity

I had to think long & hard about including this in a family site. But having done much research into material for this web site I came across the reason for the name & the reason for this Organization. The PDA uses the profit from its restaurants and hotel near Pattaya to promote awareness of birth control, family planning and sex education along with HIV awareness.

Cabbages are a common food in Northeast Thailand, in fact they are a staple part of the diet, they are grown in all villages, there are everywhere and everybody uses them. Now, if condoms could be as common and used as often, then some of the population and health problems facing Thailand could be overcome!

But then, perhaps if you think babies are born under cabbages, then you do need condoms. There are several versions of the name of the restaurant, but whatever the interpretation the meaning is good quality, affordable Thai food served in a pleasant environment. And guaranteed not to make you pregnant.

In keeping with the fun approach PDA has taken to the promotion of condoms for population control and community health, the Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant clearly has a major theme of condoms. The world's largest collection of national brand condoms are displayed around the walls and the carpet up the stairs have cartoons of typical condoms for various trades and professions woven into the fabric. Instead of serving after dinner mints, there are bowls of condoms located at the exits just in case.

The Population and Community Development Association (PDA) was founded in 1974 as a non-governmental organization with the initial aim to complement the efforts of the Royal Thai Government in promoting family planning in Thailand, especially in areas where knowledge and access to services were scarce. Utilizing a participatory, community-based approach, PDA recruited and trained residents of villages and urban neighbourhoods to provide information on family planning, including the supervised, non-medical distribution of oral contraceptives . This distribution network covered more than one-third of the country, thus contributing significantly to the decrease in the annual population growth rate from 3.3% in the mid-1970's to 0.8% in 2002. During the same period, the number of children per family fell from 7 to 1.6.

After addressing the immediate family planning needs, PDA expanded its activities to include primary health care, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, water resource development and sanitation, income-generation, environmental conservation, promotion of small-scale rural enterprise programs, gender equality, youth development, democracy promotion. The most recent activity has been the post-Tsunami social, economic, and environmental rehabilitation of the villages affected by the Tsunami.

Today, PDA is the leading and most diversified NGO in Thailand, employing over 800 staff members and working with over 12,000 volunteers . PDA has 18 regional development centres and branch offices located in 15 provinces in rural Thailand.
