Udon Thani Province is located in the heart of the Korat Plateau between the provinces of Khon Kaen to its south, and Nong Khai to its north. The city of Udon Thani, its capital, is served by the railway line that goes northeast from Saraburi through Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) and Khon Kaen to the border of Laos on the outskirts of Nong Khai city. Regular direct trains including night sleepers connect the city with Bangkok.

Udon Thani is a city in Issan, north-east Thailand, and the capital of Udon Thani Province. The Province has a population of 1,534,008  -  Geographical location and is about 560 km from Bangkok...

47 km east of Udon Thani is Thailand's premier Bronze Age excavation at Ban Chiang, the world-renowned archaeological site.

Although there is little attraction to see in the city for most travellers, there are a few quite interesting Buddhist temples & other attractions around the  Province. The city became a bustling support centre for the nearby Udon Royal Thai Air Force Base during the Vietnam War and so retains reminders of that time, with bars (many catering to European tourists), coffee shops and hotels.

( see separate article  on Air force base use during Vietnam War )

It became also the site of a Voice of America relay station alleged to have been a CIA black site. The allegations turned out to be without foundation and not even remotely credible.
